Discovery doesn’t “have to have the NBA.” It appears Wall Street disagrees. TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated ”Inside the NBA” show. Losing the rights to NBA games could throw aspects of that business partnership into question. Since WBD first began trading on Wall Street in April 2022, the stock has lost roughly 70% of its value. And for Zaslav, whose company is struggling on Wall Street, the battle could not come at a more inopportune time.

A source familiar with the negotiations told Business Insider that a deal hasn't been finalized and offers are always changing. Still, it's not clear that paying an average of $2.5 billion a year for NBA rights will be profitable. Subscription prices for Peacock, Comcast 's answer to the streaming wars, will increase by $2 this summer. The Summer Olympics begin in late July. Effective last August, ad-supported Peacock's price rose $1 to $5.99, and ad-free went up $2 to $11.99 per month. The streaming service launched in 2020 in time for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo — which was pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic. This was due in part to increased advertising revenue, which has lagged for traditional TV networks recently.

Among them was former soccer player Ashlyn Harris, whom Bush said she had known for four years and who was splitting from her wife and former teammate, Ali Krieger. Comcast beat first-quarter earnings expectations on Thursday, as broadband drove revenue even as the company and its peers have seen customer growth slow. Revenue from the domestic broadband customers segment boosted that growth as rates increased, even as Comcast lost 65,000 customers during the quarter. The three businesses now report under the same segment, which collectively saw revenue rise 1.1% to $10.37 billion. The service added 3 million paid subscribers during the quarter, bringing its total number of customers to 34 million. While domestic advertising was flat during the quarter, the company saw its domestic distribution revenue increase, driven by the growth at Peacock.

Early last year, Josh Meisel and his wife wanted to watch a new buzzy Peacock drama, “Poker Face,” starring Natasha Lyonne. But Mr. Meisel, a scientist who lives outside Boston, did not subscribe to Peacock. If they weren’t watching “Poker Face” anymore after two weeks, they would cancel Peacock. In the weeks that followed, Mr. Meisel, who is 39, cut loose Max, Apple TV+ and Hulu. CNN —Netflix, the dominant player in streaming, is expected to announce its first-quarter results on Thursday after enjoying months as a Wall Street darling. But much of the company’s past growth and success, analysts say, has come from its old, well-established business model. In recent months, Netflix has made moves to expand and even radically reinvent that business. Last year, Netflix made a particularly risky bet by pushing users who share passwords to create their own accounts — but that paid off. Netflix’s reinventionFor Netflix, last month’s Oscars were a disappointment: Though the streaming service led its rivals in nominations, it took home just one award, for best live-action short film.

Why streamers are shrinking their content libraries
  + stars: | 2024-04-02 | by ( Sarah Whitten | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +6 min
Last year many streaming services began shrinking their once-robust content libraries in order to pay smaller licensing fees. In the face of profit pressures and growing competition for viewers, streamers have taken to removing content to avoid the residual payments and licensing fees. On one side is Netflix , Amazon and Apple — companies that agnostically license content from other studios to bolster their streaming libraries. Disney-owned Hulu, meanwhile, has seen success with "feel good" 30-minute sitcoms and prestige dramas, Fandom's data shows. Creative Artists Agency, the talent agency that brokered McDaniel’s deal with NBC, also parted ways with her, the person said. McDaniel, who recently stepped down from the RNC under pressure from former President Donald Trump, was involved in attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Later on Tuesday afternoon, Merchan made public a March 10 letter from Trump's legal team that appeared to illustrate his concerns.
